Cryolipolysis
Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive treatment used to destroy fat cells. Its principle relies on controlled cooling to near sub-zero temperatures for localised reduction of fat deposits in order to reshape body contours. The exposure to cooling causes cell death of internal fat tissue without causing damage to the overlying skin. The procedure is known as a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction. This treatment is ideal for large or small pockets of fat.

How does it work?
The cryo handle is applied to the treatment area targeted for fat loss. The handle uses advanced cooling technology to selectively target fat cells and freeze them. This procedure is known as apoptosis (controlled cell death) and is gradually eliminated from the body through the body’s natural waste disposal system.
When fat cells are subjected to being cooled below body temperature the freezing causes the fat cells to die followed by a local inflammatory response. When fat cells are exposed to extreme cold conditions, the body’s usual response is to restrict circulation to keep the core of the body at the correct temperature. Cryolipolysis makes use of a powerful vacuum which adds to the inflammatory response by drawing blood up to the surface layers of the skin, killing the cells.
Areas that can be treated:
What counts as a treatment area?
Each Cryo Handle used is classed as an area so for example a pair of flanks (love handles) would be classed as 2 areas, 1 for each flank.
Further examples are:
- Upper or Lower Abdomen = 1 area
- Upper & Lower Abdomen = 2 areas
- Hips = 2 areas
- Both Love Handles = 2 areas
- Inner or outer Thighs = 2 areas
- Back Rolls = 2 areas
- Both Arms (Bingo wings) = 2 areas
- Abdomen & Both Hips = 3 areas
- Lower Abdomen & Love handles = 3 areas
- Upper & Lower Abdomen & love handles = 4 areas
Is it painful and safe?
During the procedure clients remain comfortable and can resume back to work immediately after. Cryolipolysis is completely safe and non-invasive. The technology has been approved by the Food & Drugs Administration (FDA) and there is no downtime following the treatment.
How many sessions are needed?
Results are seen after one session, for most areas. Cyro has the advantage of not usually requiring a course of treatment, however some people with higher quantities of stubborn fat may choose to have two - three treatments. Depending on the thickness of the fat and your personal goals, fat freezing may be repeated the same for a second time, but is not always necessary. If you choose that you would like a further reduction in the same area, preferable waiting time between sessions is approximately 2 months. This is to give enough time to measure the effectiveness of the initial treatment.
Clinical trial data has shown for most people, a second treatment within about 2 months of the first treatment does lead to greater reduction.
How is the fat eliminated from the body?
The fat will gradually leave the body through the lymphatic system and this can take up to 30-90 days for the body to remove the frozen fat cells. (See diagram above)
How long does a session take?
A typical treatment takes 30 minutes’ maximum per area.
How much fat is expected to be lost in 1 session?
A 25%- 40% reduction of the body fat is the expected removal in one 30-minute session, per area.
Advantages of Cryolipolysis
As a completely non-invasive procedure, Cryolipolysis offers patients many benefits over other fat reduction procedures. Some of these benefits include:
- No incisions
- Minimal pain compared to surgery
- No anaesthetic needed
- No downtime
- Usually takes less than an hour
- Affordable
Normal post treatment reactions
Reddening of the skin can take a few hours to a few days to subside. Temporary bruising to the skin, which can take up to 2 weeks to subside. On the rare occasion a patient may experience a temporary dulling sensation to the frozen area, which will subside within a week.
Post treatment care
After care advice is to increase your water intake, avoid caffeine and other toxins to support your body’s natural processes. However, please remember Cryolipolysis is not substitute for taking care of your body, and you should follow the simple aftercare advice.
You may feel more motivated to take care of yourself after the treatment; after all it is an investment. Combining Cryolipolysis with a healthy diet and lifestyle will only further maximise your result.
Please note: On the extremely rare occasion, patient may experience some skin discolouration which goes away overtime by moisturising and massaging the area.
